Carl Replacement Update: What to Expect Feb 24th-Feb 27th

2/24/2012

Comments

So SFMTA has an update for what to expect this weekend, which begins the Carl Street Rail Replacement Project, set to be completed next year Feb 2013. This weekend will be the first of a long stretch of consecutive weekend construction on Carl Street.

Residents and Merchants on Carl Street
This weekend consists of sewer replacement from Arguello to Willard from 7am to 9pm Saturday and Sunday. There will be one westbound traffic lane open and eastbound traffic will be detoured around work zone. Driveways on south side (address 341-399) will be impacted but not permanently blocked. Expect delays. These addresses have already been notified.

Traffic Closures and Detours
These closures and detours will be between 7pm Friday to 5am Monday this upcoming weekend.

- Carl Street will be closed to EASTBOUND traffic, though westbound will be open between Arguello and Willard.
- Detours will be posted and signed.
- NORTHBOUND Hillway Street will be closed at Carl Street.
- Bike routes will not be affected.
- BUS stops on Frederick Street (two at Cole and one at Stanyan) for N bus shuttle will require temporary parking removal.

Local access will be granted and all businesses will remain open.

Street parking will not be available in and around the construction sites.

Muni Service
The N Muni line will be adjusted and served by a bus shuttle during the weekend's construction. The shutle will operate between Ocean Beach and Church. The service will run as an express between Cole and Frederick and Castro and Duboce. N Owl bus will be rerouted from Carl Street onto Frederick Street.

EOS Closing After 15 Years, Replaced by Mamacita's twin Papazote

2/14/2012

Comments

This cornerstone neighborhood eatery is set to close at the end of the month. This confirmation is from Exec Chef Christopher Long, who "attributes the closure to the owner's cash-flow troubles (GrubStreet)" Though the restaurant is known for their tasty small plates, folks have continued to come back. I guess the customers are flocking enough to keep up with the expenses, not to mention SF real estate has been exceedingly expensive and hard for most to afford. GrudStreet states that, "it will surely be missed by the 'hood, but that is some prime real estate right there. It's likely to get snapped up fast...it already has."

Mamacita, a semi-upscale Mexican restaurant, has bought the space and plans to open, "a more refined version of Mamacita there called Papazote," which happens to be the male equivalent of mamacita. Papazote aims to open mid-summer.

ColeValleySF says so long to the neighborhood's prized EOS and welcomes the space's new restaurant, Mamacita.

"The community keeps us fresh"

Are you a long-time resident of the Cole Valley neighborhood, as far back as the mid 80s? Did you see this hip group of hair stylists chilling outside a shop on Carl Street? Well this hip hair salon, Mane Attraction, is still one of the prime salons in the neighborhood. The salon, just feet from the N Judah Carl/Cole Muni stop, has been cutting, primping, crimping, and dying hair since 1982. Don't you wish you lived in this neighborhood in the 1980s too?!

Current owner, Grant Phillips, has been working at Mane since its' beginnings  and has transformed it into a hip, modern and chic hair salon. He's got all of San Francisco buzzing, with clientele from all over the city. Now that must be some good service if folks are coming all the way from North Beach.  Mane is a full service salon, providing haircuts to all hair types, weddings, event hair, and even make up! They also specialize in natural hair for African American men and women (chat up Willie!). Ultimately, Mane Attraction is a salon for everyone!

Currently, there are nine stylists, all giving a little something different to make the salon such a diverse and artistic place. There is such a great dynamic between the hairstylists that keep the salon's atmosphere fun and drama-free. As Grant says, "they all just fit. We are a good crew and always help one another out." The artwork on the walls were created by stylists, Brooke Hall andNancy Ahn. There is also artwork by illustrator, Zach O'Hora. These pieces truly show what an artistic bunch Mane's stylists are. What is particularly unique about Mane Attraction, is that they have a partnership with Bumble and Bumble, a luxurious hair product company out of New York City. One look into the salon, and you will see rows upon rows of Bumble and Bumble products- if you have been hunting for this stuff, look no further 'cause Mane is stocked! Through their partnership, Bumble and Bumble provides classes and workshops for the stylists, helping them achieve the latest hair trend or with perfecting the stylists' own style and skills. "We want to do hair right," andBumble and Bumble allows the stylists to be, "continually learning and always eager to change it up" with their techniques.

Having been in Cole Valley neighborhood for over twenty years, Mane Attraction has been the salon of Cole Valley offering full hair services to the San Francisco Bay Area with a spunky and hip twist. Over the years, Mane has continued to be a great salon for a terrific haircut. With eclectic and artistic stylists and a fun atmosphere, who wouldn't want to get their hair cut there. So, we have to ask you, when will you be making your next appointment at Mane?

Mane Attraction is located at 103 Carl Street, near the Carl/Cole N Judah Muni Stop!
