GG park To Create Community Garden

To meet the need for more community garden plots and to advance the Mayor’s Executive Directive on Healthy and Sustainable Food, the Recreation and Park Department is proposing to construct at least 40 new garden plots, gardening material supply bins and a tool lending library at 780 Frederick Street.

The 0.66-acre site is situated at the northwest corner of Frederick/Arguello Streets. The site has the potential to host a total of more than 120 plots and/or other garden and agricultural features. Future development phases at the site will be presented to this Commission once additional funding is identified and community input obtained regarding desired programming features. The site is readily accessible via the MUNI ‘N’ and #71 lines that service the area.

In addition to approximately 40 community garden plots, the Recreation and Park Department is proposing to make available common landscape materials (mulch, chips and fines) stocked in holding bins and a gardening-tool lending library – both unique public resources currently not available in San Francisco).

The Recreation and Park Department shall emphasis environmentally sustainable practices at the site in its design and programmatic and operating features, including a native plant nursery as part of the materials distribution component. Surplus produce from garden plots would be given away to food bank and/or food pantries.

Ice Cream Bar Proposes Parklet in Cole Valley

4/23/2013

Comments

The Ice Cream Bar and Soda Fountain in Cole Valley has proposed a parklet!! What are your thoughts? Do you think it's a great idea, considering that The Ice Cream Bar has limited indoor seating and it would help create more business for them? Or do you think that Cole Valley is already tight on parking spaces that taking another 2 parking spaces (remember when SFMTA took a bunch on Carl Street due to N Judah Rail Replacement/Improvement Project??), that CV neighbors desperately need.

On Nextdoor, Ted Loewenberg from the Haight Ashbury Improvement Association invites you to write to DPW with your thoughts. He also invites you to CC him at tedlsf[at]sbcglobal[dot]net so he can provide feedback to the ICB.

ARMED ROBBERY IN COLE VALLEY!

4/8/2013

Comments

A UCSF employee was robbed at run point last Friday (April 5th) around 5pm at Cole Street and Carmel Street. The victim was approached from behind and was ordered to hand over her belongings, including a backpack and iPhone, putting a black handgun to her side. The suspect was described as being 25-30 years old male who ran to a new model Ford.

Do you have any information on the robbery? Call SFPD or send tips via text message 415-575-4444.

As a neighborhood that prides itself on safety and being family-friendly, we at ColeValleySF are disturbed and hope that this is a one time incident. But regardless, those walking around be aware of your surroundings even in our hood., especially when you are checking your phone.

BUENA VISTA PARK VOLUNTEER DAY!

4/5/2013

Comments

Thanks to Buena Vista Neighborhood News' monthly e-newsletter, we found out about some great events happening around the neighborhood, specifically the MONTHLY BUENA VISTA PARK VOLUNTEER DAY!

BVNA's  next Monthly Volunteer Day in Buena Vista Park is THIS SATURDAY, April 4 from 9:00am until noon - rain or shine (unless monsoon rain, or very heavy wind).

Here's the details:
We'll start at the Children's Playground above Buena Vista West at Waller Street, with the latest neighborhood news and warm and tasty refreshments (thanks to a generous BVNA Member!). Then you'll have your choice of working with the BVPark gardening staff on maintenance and weeding (trust us - it's fantastic aggression therapy!!) along the popular "new" boardwalk on the SE Hillside, or with the Natural Areas team doing maintenance in the Native California Oak Woodlands above Haight Street. We provide all the needed gloves and tools; you please wear sturdy shoes. This is a great opportunity to meet your neighbors and other BVPark supporters, and to help our Park. Perfect for all ages, all levels of agility, ability and gardening skill, and (especially!) for younger kids with adult supervision.

We hope you'll join us! - this our next-to-last Monthly Volunteer Day for the season. We take a break from June thru August and resume in September. During the summer the Park's gardening staff will be hard at work with extra staff colleagues, and with earn-and-learn students from Enterprise for High School Students (EHSS) - see below - on renovation and major maintenance projects.
