This storefront on Stanyan near Frederick has had a rough go of it. From a nail and tanning salon to a fitness studio, what will be next? Anyone have any guesses or better yet - what do you want to come to our neighborhood??

Every time I pass by the new InVino restaurant, there's always something new going on whether its painting the outside or trying to sneak a peek through the parchment covered windows. Luckily, we got the inside scoop from Tablehopper!! It sure looks a lot different from the old Hama-Ko interior. We got some new information thanks to an article on Tablehopper about the new Italian wine bar. Here's what you'll expect from food wise: "But it’s not just a wine bar, no signore. This enoteca is going to have quite a number of delicioso things to eat, starting with an array of crudi, a variety of toppings on crostone and bruschette, and hello, three different presentations of mozzarella (all these items will be available as single items, or in flights for the ultimate in grazing). There will also be a couple of panini, and a choice selection of cheeses and salumi, plus two or three piatti del giorno, featuring plates like baked pastas and braised meats." From Tablehopper's article, InVino should be opening around the end of August/beginning of September. Am I sensing a Labor Day weekend opening perhaps? They will be open everyday at 4:30pm except Mondays and look like they will be opening for lunch shortly after they open. UPDATE: They recently added signage and a small lamp at the entrance. Got a peek inside one day and saw staff folding napkins and stocking the shelves! Looks like it will be opening very soon! To read the rest of the article and see some shots of the interior check it out here! So remember that quaint nail/tanning/waxing salon on Stanyan and Frederick? Well San Francisco Sun Tanning Salon is no longer and it looks like it's getting a facelift! It seems like the owners have closed due to financial reasons. Their website states the following:"Sadly, despite our efforts to continue in this economy, San Francisco Sun has closed. Please know, we are grateful for each and every customer and neighbor who has supported us over the past 10 years." The 10 year old tanning salon will be reopening as a Cardio gym.. Could be promising considering the CV hood doesn't have much in the form of cardio and dance exercise classes. We got the pilates place on Waller, Midline on Lincoln, and Cole Valley Fitness on Cole but no dancing! Not sure when Cole Valley Cardio will be open for business but it looks like it will be soon. Bacon Bacon will be serving up delicious bacon items in Cole Valley once again! Jim Angelus successfully gained approval from the Planning Commission on yesterday! The decision will allow the business to reopen, although a new ventilation and filtration system must be installed in a reasonable time frame, since the main reason why they closed was due to neighbors complaining of the bacon smell. "I like to put a smile on people's face," Angelus said. "That makes me happy serving people food." While his Frederick Street location was closed, Angelus opened another location at the Brick and Mortar Music Hall in the Mission district to allow him to continue to cook and prepare food for his mobile operation. At that location, Angelus has also started serving lunch during the week and on weekends during shows. It will remain as the primary prep kitchen for the food truck, so more bacon for the Mission hipsters, woot! This blog was adapted from the article via the SF Examiner. See the full article here. Muni bus collided with a car Thursday evening near the Panhandle, sending the bus driver to the hospital, officials said. The 43-Masonic bus struck a car making an illegal U-turn near the intersection of Fell Street and Masonic Avenue at 6:20 p.m., Muni officials said. The bus then rolled into the park, where it eventually came to a stop. The driver was taken to San Francisco General Hospital with unspecified injuries. No one else was hurt.
Article originally written by Will Kane via SFGate. As Bacon Bacon closed its' doors last Friday, it seems as though many media outlets have picked up the story, including SNL's Weekend Update. Guest star Amy Poehler mentioned the pork shop but sadly made no mention of Cole Valley. Bacon Bacon, a beloved mobile food truck throughout the Bay Area, decided to open a pop-up restaurant in Cole Valley early last year. It had great promise with customers flocking to grab an early morning bacon and egg sandwich before their morning commute. But sadly, Bacon Bacon was forced to close its' doors on May 17th after its neighbors' complained about the overwhelming bacon aroma exuding from the restaurant. The complaints revealed some permit issues which also led to the restaurant having to shut down operations. A public hearing is scheduled to take place later this summer in order for Bacon Bacon to continue operations. But don't fear all your bacon fans! Bacon Bacon has re-opened its' mobile food truck and will continue to bring bacon to the streets of the Bay Area!
Also, Bacon Bacon has since teamed up with Brick & Mortar Music Hall and will begin serving lunch Monday through Friday 11am-2:30pm beginning June 24th. And 'once they find their groove' they will be opening up at 7:30am to offer coffee and breakfast. Check out their Brick & Mortar location here: http://www.baconbaconsf.com/the-cafe Thanks to @olidreamer, we got tipped off that there might be an Italian restaurant and wine bar moving into the old Hama-Ko location on Carl Street. Hama-Ko, a delicious hole-in-the-wall sushi restaurant, closed it's doors fall 2012 and it has been vacant ever since. Recently, we saw some parchment paper go up on the windows which is a good sign that someone has rented it out and is starting to do construction. Hard to imagine how a new restaurant would look because it is such a small space. If anyone has any other information about what might this storefront be (more specifics), please mention us on Twitter, use the #colevalley, and let us know! UPDATE: We now have gotten confirmation that there will indeed be a new Italian wine bar opening into the old Hama-Ko location on Carl Street. Perbacco's long-time wine director, Claudio Villani, is going off on his own to open a “contemporary enoteca” called InoVino. The small 30-seat spot will be going into 108 Carl Street —right across the street from the now ridiculously popular Padrecito. Villani says his inspiration for the business comes from this friendly, well-known Florentine panini spot called ‘ino. Villani is going to offer wines from all over the world (Greece, Spain, South America, Italy, France). The price of bottles will range from $25 to $65, and there will be at least 30 wines by the glass for $8 to $15. The menu will consist mostly of cheeses and charcuterie from local and international producers, along with crostini, bruschette, and crudo. Villani will spend next month in Italy for some more inspiration. He plans to open InoVino in July. Source: SF Magazine Check their facebook page for more details! Should be a good time!
There have been some recent changes to the former EOS corner on Carl and Cole. In the last week, blue paint has been added and just a few days ago the sign was added, "Padrecito." No news when Mamacita's brother restaurant will open but looks like it might be soon! Watch this space for more updates on the new Mexican restaurant coming to our quaint little neighborhood.
In the mean time, check out Mamacita's (in the Marina on Chestnut) website. Supposedly it is the "Best Mexican in the San Francisco Bay Area." Sounds promising! UPDATE (via SF GrubStreet) Looks like Padrecito won't be opening in February but now they are pushing it to March. Padrecito will be a more refined version of their original restaurant, Mamacita. No news on what the menu will consist of but they have been able to secure their liquor license so there will be sure to be very delicious drinks! Bacon Bacon might have to close their doors due to complaints by two neighbors near Bacon Bacon. The bacon-obsessed food shop is collecting signatures from neighborhoods and bacon lovers everywhere to submit to SF City Planning in hopes of keeping the storefront on Frederick Street open for all to enjoy. "Two neighbors near Bacon Bacon want to see our doors closed. We need your support" We here at ColeValleySF have always supported local businesses, whether a food shop or a hair salon. We believe in the importance of locally owned storefronts because it really helps make the Cole Valley neighborhood, at let's face it San Francisco as a whole, a unique place to live. Even in our small nook, we have seen many local businesses fail but have also seen new ones thrive! We hope the our neighbors (that's you Upper Haight and Ashbury Heights...and I guess Frederick's Knob too) will see the appreciation and need for local businesses. So signing the petition to keep Bacon Bacon is not just about helping Bacon Bacon thrive but also to support local storefronts in general.
Go to Bacon Bacon's website and sign the petition to KEEP BACON BACON IN THE HAIGHT! We love you guys and hope you stick around! |
