ZAZIE Goes Tip Free

6/12/2015

Comments

Picture
Zazie has recently gone tip free as a way to bridge the gap between employees at the front and back of the restaurant and ensure a more equal pay scale. Owner, Jennifer Piallat has always put her employees first, with offering paid time off, retirement plans and health insurance.  With the new system, all employees will get a raise; servers will see a three to seven percent increase and the back of the house will enjoy a solid 35% boost.

In a recent SFEater article, Piallat tried to sway San Franciscans who might be on the fence about this new system.
"The thing is," Piallat explains, "we’re not adding a 20% service charge. Servers are getting 11 percent. Plus, they don’t do the best they can to keep you happy because they’re worried you’re going to dock their tip. They want you happy so that you don’t call their manager and so that you don’t disturb their section. No one wants to deal with an angry customer."

Though this is great for the employees of Zazie, customers should be aware that with this new no-tip system, prices have increased by 15-20% so keep that in mind. All in all, we are happy that Zazie is putting employees first and setting an example for other restaurants as well. Great job!

Burglary at Carl/ColeĀ

8/27/2013

Comments

The SFPD’s roundup report yesterday included a burglary in Cole Valley. The report spoke of a burglary that happened in the 800 block of Cole at Carl. A call to the SFPD was unable to confirm the exact location of the business, but likely options include the Ice Cream Bar, Kezar Bar and Crepes on Cole, probably in that order.

UPDATE! NEW INVINO WINE BAR TO OPEN End of Aug/Early Sept!

8/7/2013

PicturePhoto via Tablehopper
Every time I pass by the new InVino restaurant, there's always something new going on whether its painting the outside or trying to sneak a peek through the parchment covered windows. Luckily, we got the inside scoop from Tablehopper!! It sure looks a lot different from the old Hama-Ko interior.

We got some new information thanks to an article on Tablehopper about the new Italian wine bar. Here's what you'll expect from food wise:

"But it’s not just a wine bar, no signore. This enoteca is going to have quite a number of delicioso things to eat, starting with an array of crudi, a variety of toppings on crostone and bruschette, and hello, three different presentations of mozzarella (all these items will be available as single items, or in flights for the ultimate in grazing). There will also be a couple of panini, and a choice selection of cheeses and salumi, plus two or three piatti del giorno, featuring plates like baked pastas and braised meats."

Picture
From Tablehopper's article, InVino should be opening around the end of August/beginning of September. Am I sensing a Labor Day weekend opening perhaps? They will be open everyday at 4:30pm except Mondays and look like they will be opening for lunch shortly after they open.

UPDATE: They recently added signage and a small lamp at the entrance. Got a peek inside one day and saw staff folding napkins and stocking the shelves! Looks like it will be opening very soon!

BACON BACON TO REOPEN IN COLE VALLEY!

7/12/2013

Comments

Picture
Bacon Bacon will be serving up delicious bacon items in Cole Valley once again! Jim Angelus successfully gained approval from the Planning Commission on yesterday!

The decision will allow the business to reopen, although a new ventilation and filtration system must be installed in a reasonable time frame, since the main reason why they closed was due to neighbors complaining of the bacon smell.

"I like to put a smile on people's face," Angelus said. "That makes me happy serving people food."

While his Frederick Street location was closed, Angelus opened another location at the Brick and Mortar Music Hall in the Mission district to allow him to continue to cook and prepare food for his mobile operation. At that location, Angelus has also started serving lunch during the week and on weekends during shows. It will remain as the primary prep kitchen for the food truck, so more bacon for the Mission hipsters, woot!

Sparrow bar and kitchen to open on haight july 6th

6/26/2013

Sparrow Bar and Kitchen is set to open July 6th in the old Bia's Restaurant and Wine Bar location at 1640 Haight Street. It will be a great addition to Haight's dining scene since it seems to be lacking a bit in dinner options (think Alembic and Magnolia, though they are both relatively recent to Haight as well). From the sneak peek photos from SF Magazine, the interiors look very inviting with wood stained tables and metal chairs. Sparrow also boasts a large 40 person back patio with heat lamps! The menu, created by Ola Fendert (of Oola in SOMA), will be based on seasonal fare including roasted baby beets, cured salmon, and caramel chocolate molten cake. We look forward to this new addition to the Haight and can't wait to welcome them to the 'neighborhood!'

UPDATE: InoVino to open in old hama-ko location JULY 2013

5/3/2013

Thanks to @olidreamer, we got tipped off that there might be an Italian restaurant and wine bar moving into the old Hama-Ko location on Carl Street. Hama-Ko, a delicious hole-in-the-wall sushi restaurant, closed it's doors fall 2012 and it has been vacant ever since. Recently, we saw some parchment paper go up on the windows which is a good sign that someone has rented it out and is starting to do construction. Hard to imagine how a new restaurant would look because it is such a small space. If anyone has any other information about what might this storefront be (more specifics), please mention us on Twitter, use the #colevalley, and let us know!

UPDATE: We now have gotten confirmation that there will indeed be a new Italian wine bar opening into the old Hama-Ko location on Carl Street. Perbacco's long-time wine director, Claudio Villani, is going off on his own to open a “contemporary enoteca” called InoVino. The small 30-seat spot will be going into 108 Carl Street —right across the street from the now ridiculously popular Padrecito. Villani says his inspiration for the business comes from this friendly, well-known Florentine panini spot called ‘ino. Villani is going to offer wines from all over the world (Greece, Spain, South America, Italy, France). The price of bottles will range from $25 to $65, and there will be at least 30 wines by the glass for $8 to $15. The menu will consist mostly of cheeses and charcuterie from local and international producers, along with crostini, bruschette, and crudo. Villani will spend next month in Italy for some more inspiration. He plans to open InoVino in July.

Ice Cream Bar Proposes Parklet in Cole Valley

4/23/2013

Comments

The Ice Cream Bar and Soda Fountain in Cole Valley has proposed a parklet!! What are your thoughts? Do you think it's a great idea, considering that The Ice Cream Bar has limited indoor seating and it would help create more business for them? Or do you think that Cole Valley is already tight on parking spaces that taking another 2 parking spaces (remember when SFMTA took a bunch on Carl Street due to N Judah Rail Replacement/Improvement Project??), that CV neighbors desperately need.

On Nextdoor, Ted Loewenberg from the Haight Ashbury Improvement Association invites you to write to DPW with your thoughts. He also invites you to CC him at tedlsf[at]sbcglobal[dot]net so he can provide feedback to the ICB.

Padrecito coming soon!

2/19/2013

There have been some recent changes to the former EOS corner on Carl and Cole. In the last week, blue paint has been added and just a few days ago the sign was added, "Padrecito." No news when Mamacita's brother restaurant will open but looks like it might be soon! Watch this space for more updates on the new Mexican restaurant coming to our quaint little neighborhood.

In the mean time, check out Mamacita's (in the Marina on Chestnut) website. Supposedly it is the "Best Mexican in the San Francisco Bay Area." Sounds promising!

UPDATE (via SF GrubStreet)

Looks like Padrecito won't be opening in February but now they are pushing it to March. Padrecito will be a more refined version of their original restaurant, Mamacita. No news on what the menu will consist of but they have been able to secure their liquor license so there will be sure to be very delicious drinks!
