City Services
Every community has its own nuances when it comes to our lovely City of San Francisco Services. Here is some basic information and resources you will need to know when living in Cole Valley.
Garbage Day
Our Neighborhood is serviced by Sunset Scavenger. Trash day is Tuesday (between 8am-10am) and compost is later in the day (around 10am or 11am).
Recycling
Cole Hardware accepts many odd recyclables, such as batteries, light bulbs, etc. Feel free to drop off items during business hours.
Plastic Loose Fill Council can reuse your plastic loose fill (packing peanuts). Call their Peanut Hotline at (800) 828-2214
FP International in Redwood City will take baled EPS (expanded polystyrene) or in simple jargin, those rigid foam packing materials that hold computers, etc in place.
San Francisco Department of the Environment has information about local recycling programs and hazardous waste pick-up and drop-off.
Sunset Scavenger Company
Materials for Art and Educational Projects
SCRAP—Scroungers’ Center for Reusable Art Parts collects materials from businesses and distributes them to art and educational groups.
East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse collects and redistributes re-usable materials for education, arts and crafts and many other creative projects.
Resource Area for Teachers (RAFT) accepts clean, reusable items that can provide Bay Area teachers and community groups with learning materials
Make-Stuff.com web site features craft projects and other “how to reuse” ideas.
Parking
One endearing attribute of Cole Valley is the parking. Residents are able to get "J" Permits from SFMTA. For those with garages, information about driveway clearances is available through SFMTA also. Although, not difficult to find parking (normally), there are on-going notes left on "inconsiderate drivers" windshields. When parking your car, be aware of the signs and of the space you leave around your bumpers, you may get an angry note if you leave too much space. Parking Enforcement does make its rounds within our neighborhood, although sporadically. When they do come around with their chalk, make sure to move your car because just wiping the chalk off will not suffice.
Street Cleaning
Those of us that do park in the street have probably gotten hit with a parking ticket, or two. Here is a somewhat comprehensive list of the Street Cleaning Schedule. Because some street cleaning only occurs once a month, it's easy to go about your daily routing and forget about your car. The following schedule is as accurate as possible, but always check the signs when you park on the street:
North/South streets
1st Tuesday and Wednesday of every month: Cole, Belvedere, Stanyan, Shrader, Clayton
East/West streets
1st Thursday and Friday of every month: Parnassus, Grattan, Alma, Rivoli, 17th, Belgrave
every Monday and Tuesday: Waller, Belluah, Frederick, Carl
